Levi’s x Opening Ceremony

Sub Rosa joined forces with Levi’s® to promote their collaboration with Opening Ceremony during Fashion Week 2011 in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The outdoor media execution included a full MTA subway takeover in New York’s Columbus Circle (closest major hub to Fashion Week shows), a variety of outdoor projections, wild postings, and other outdoor media.

General Electric – TED 2011

GE’s installation at TED was focused on exhibiting artistic interpretations of some of their most innovative technologies. Artwork ranged from a wall of sculpted busts that, when paired with GE’s handheld ultrasound technology, allowed attendees to reveal hidden works of art beneath the surface, to a dynamic data visualization that synced with GE’s InBody scales to take the weight and BMI of the TED audience and compare it to national averages. Other installations included x-ray photography from artist Nick Veasey to Yves Behar’s prolific and drool-inducing designs for GE’s Wattstation.

SyFy – TED 2011

Sub Rosa worked in concert with Syfy to suspend the idea of attending a conference and transporting yourself to another place. The space became home to a “creature terrarium” of fabricated other-worldly animals that brought the space to life. In addition, custom lighting installations added a mood that made the space glow from corner to corner. In addition, a life simulcast was streamed to New York where Syfy team members and advertisers were able to virtually join the conversations at TED through telepresence robots from Anybots. These robots in both markets allowed New York and Long Beach attendees to have virtual conversations and explore each other’s spaces while on opposite coasts. New York’s experience was topped off with a molecular gastronomy demonstration and food service that reimagined traditional dishes in new ways for diners.

AT&T – TED 2011

The AT&T Space was an interactive experience designed to explore the ideas of wonder through the brand’s “Network of Intelligence.” A tube-based sculptural installation was created and rigged with interactive lighting displays that showcased the “pulse” of TED – measured through conversations and tweets tracked by a custom software application. A large-scale microtile wall (20 feet long!) kept the conversation aggregated and TED attendees abreast of what AT&T programming would take place throughout the week. Touch surfaces and Cisco TelePresence stations rounded out the installation, allowing attendees to connect live with the people and content that make AT&T’s Network of Intelligence thrive.

Levi’s Photo Workshop – New York

Following up the success of the Levi’s® Print Shop in San Francisco, Sub Rosa launched the Levi’s® Photo Workshop in the heart of Manhattan. During our time in New York we worked with iconic collaborators such as April Bloomfield (The Breslin, John Dory), Michael Stipe, Taschen, SPIN and Vice Magazines, HBO’s cast and crew of “Eastbound and Down”, and many many more.
Over the span of our 75 days, more than 50,000 people passed through the doors. Whether shooting on the main stage with our high-end Leica S-Systems, renting from the myriad of vintage cameras, or simply mugging for a photo booth picture, the main message remained clear – Levi’s® is a brand of the creative class and here to help local communities re-embrace their desires for craftsmanship and community.
The Workshop has packed up and will travel west where we’ll unveil a new incarnation this April in Los Angeles. See you then.

7 For All Mankind

The 7 For All Mankind team approached Sub Rosa for the redesign and development of their website in the summer of 2010. The brand was looking to enhance both the usability and functionality of the site; offering an expanded experience that takes into account the needs of the brand’s expansion into a variety of additional product lines.
Sub Rosa worked closely with the brand after the redesign to also design and launch the brand’s blog. Curating content and developing online activity was essential in driving new traffic to the site after the redesign. As the brand continues to grow, new functionality and content will be integrated to continue to keep the site fresh and in step with the pace of the brand’s fashion sensibility.

General Electric Ecomagination Showcase

Sub Rosa was engaged by GE to work on the 5 year anniversary of Ecomagination. In the past 5 years, the brand has spent millions of dollars and countless hours developing a suite of innovative and ecologically conscious programs, businesses, and products. Sub Rosa was asked to support the anniversary by curating a product installation in San Francisco’s Bently Reserve, showcasing 20 of the company’s most crowning achievements.
Working with collaborators from MIT Media Lab and NASA, Sub Rosa brought together some of the finest minds to help build installations that took the showcase from simple product displays to full-on experiences.
In order to showcase some of GE’s wind power innovations, we build a 15 foot long cloud that floated in the room and had data about wind power projected into it.
To display some of the brand’s avionics innovations we worked with long-time friend and collaborator Aaron Koblin to install his Flight Paths artwork that is currently on display in New York’s MOMA.
These are just two of many curiosity piquing installations that helped bring the spirit of Ecomagination to life. Be on the look out for more collaborations between Sub Rosa and GE soon.

Levi’s Print Workshop – San Francisco

Sub Rosa and Levi’s® have collaborated to conceive and create Levi’s® Workshops. Started on July 1st, 2010, the Workshops are a series of craft-based community spaces build to encourage creation, inspiration, and collaboration. The first expression of this is a print shop located in San Francisco’s Mission District. Each workshop will run for 60 days, working with collaborators, celebrities, and local organizations to create new and engaging design projects that help bring messages of their pioneering spirit to life.
The program has been touted in the press as a powerful new type of campaign that looks at digital and experiential work collectively and works to bridge the gap between consumers and corporations. Levi’s® Workshops is one of the most integrated programs in the brand’s history – taking into consideration the objectives of marketing, retail, design, digital, corporate social responsibility, and the brand at large.
As more Workshops open across the country, check back with us and learn more.

Sub Rosa has only just started to work with the brand and thus far, our work is for internal eyes only. Check back often to see how our relationship with the brand continues to grow.

Operation Design

Sub Rosa’s founder Michael Ventura is one of the founding members of this new but growing non-profits in New York. Working with public high school students from the 5 boroughs, Operation Design has brought together some of New York’s finest architecture firms like The Rockwell Group, to work with students to re-conceive their school’s designs.
Most recently, the organization with the help of Sub Rosa launched an art auction that brought together some of New York’s most prolific street artists and gave them each an iconic chair from Eames to use as their palette. The piece was met with droves of PR and the chairs were hung in Barney’s New York windows during New York’s Design Week. An auction for the chairs was held online and the proceeds have been used to fund projects in New York’s school system.
There’s more to come from this little organization that could. Check back for updates.

Tribal Link

Sub Rosa has been a member of the United Nations’ Department of Public Information for the past 5 years. We work with a variety of NGOs and non-profits within the UN to develop creative and strategic work that help them make the world a better place. Tribal Link is an organization focused on supporting and sustaining indigenous cultures around the globe that are subject to industrialization, gentrification, or urban sprawl. We have helped the organization rebrand their digital presence as well as supported several efforts to bring the message of indigenous people to the world.
In early 2010, the organization’s founder Pamela Kraft requested that Sub Rosa’s Michael Ventura come to the UN to give a talk on the role of communications to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It was a riveting experience that Ventura stated “changed the way he looks at the world.” There are a variety of special projects that are being worked on between Sub Rosa and Tribal Link to help raise awareness and funding for their noble efforts. Check out their site or check back here from time to time to see how things have progressed.

Kiehl’s History

For a brand as old as Kiehl’s (est. 1851) it’s an honor to be asked to help them develop a piece to tell the story of their history. Working closely with the motion graphics mavens at Brooklyn’s HUSH Studios, Sub Rosa and filmmaker Peter Rhoads assembled a fantastic animation that takes you on a ride from local apothecary to international retailer. Give it a look and see for yourself.
PS – We recommend the Kiehl’s Musk as a Sub Rosa favorite.

TED Conference

For the past few years, Sub Rosa and TED have become close friends. Whether it’s participating in an insights session with some of TED’s most interesting minds, or curating brand sponsorships for some of the conferences themselves, Sub Rosa and TED have found working together to be a great experience. Check out the work done for Absolut at 2009′s TED Global conference in Oxford, England. It was regarded by TED’s curator Chris Anderson as “the best late night experience in TED’s history.”
For more information on TED and how to get involved, please feel free to reach out to us. We’d be happy to help connect dots if we can.
